Over time, and for various reasons, we develop compensations. Perhaps daily movement has been neglected because we sit in front of a computer more than ever before. Perhaps you look down at your Smartphone for half of each day. Perhaps you’ve sustained an injury due to an accident. The body will make up for a weakness by asking more of other muscles and joints than they are designed to do. This becomes what most people term ‘overuse,’ but in reality it is improper use. The good news is that your body reacts to stimulus all day long, and you can reverse compensations by reintroducing proper movement into your daily routine. In no time at all, you will feel taller, straighter, stronger and more connected than ever with PTX Therapy.
Defined as Postural Therapy with the X-factor (see About PTX for more details). Unlike practices such as physical therapy, massage therapy, chiropractic and other pain-treatment therapies, we do not use hands-on manipulations, drugs, machines, or physical agents. Our therapeutic exercise approach emphasizes restoring optimum postural function to the human body, by focusing on the deep postural muscles. We give you the know-how to help change your posture and symptoms by re-educating the body to operate as it is designed. Muscles dictate bone/joint/spine alignment 100% of the time. By reducing or eliminating structural/mechanical deviations that enables healing, you can regain efficient function of body systems even beyond neuro-musculoskeletal, i.e. there can be a visceral effect (digestive, circulatory, respiratory, etc) too. PTX is foundational.
Although our approach incorporates movements and poses from all types of exercise programs, including Pilates and yoga, our focus is to relieve pain by assessing and improve posture, joint position, and muscular function. For the most part a PTX program is much more personalized/specific than yoga and Pilates. Furthermore, there are techniques that we differ on, such as the suck & tuck (tightening of the stomach) which is a focus in Pilates. PTX daily routines are designed specifically for you to address any existing biomechanical dysfunctions. Routines are also highly individualized to address your unique history and to unravel your patterns of compensation and dysfunction. Most clients find that this approach then greatly improves their ability to practice yoga, Pilates and perform all other sports or daily activities.
Traditional physical therapy employs the use of a generalized protocol to treat a specific injury or part of the body in pain. Although our approach can work in conjunction with physical therapy, we differ in that we focus on treating the cause not merely the symptom, and we do not use any traditional modalities (ice, heat, ultrasound, muscle-stim, therapeutic manipulation or massage, etc.). PTX remains focused on improving joint position and biomechanics throughout the entire body, to eliminate pain and improve function. In addition to addressing the body as a unit, we also take into account your entire list of symptoms and seek to resolve them as connected problems. In this way, you will finally be able to end the cycle of pain and compensation.
Sometimes the condition of the joint or spine may need surgical intervention, that is, if the structure (and too much of it) is too damaged to heal on it’s own. Even in this case, PTX Therapy is extremely valuable pre-operation, by setting up the body for the surgery, and post-op by focusing not just on the joint or area but rather on the entire body. So if you’ve already had surgery you need PTX. Most likely the actual reason for needing the surgery (outside of a traumatic event) has nothing to do with where the surgery did/will take place. Remember, the condition occurred as a result of time + compensation and imbalances, not as a result of just time (“age” – see the Age and Wear & Tear video). Therefore, the surgery does not fix the muscular compensations and postural issues – you must address those! To grab an analogy, if tires on your car are unevenly worn out – should you just throw on some new ones without an alignment? Exactly J So, if we get the alignment done early enough, your tires will be fine, but even if you need new tires, you need the alignment.
The most important thing is to be aware of how you feel once you begin your postural routine. Some clients continue with a combination of therapies in order to make the most progress. However, most often people find that their need for other treatments are diminished or eliminated altogether as a result of PTX Therapy. If you continue to seek assistance from another practitioner, it’s good to communicate with him/her about what your posture routine entails. No matter what else you are doing, PTX is foundational to your game-plan.
The routines are designed to complement traditional fitness and training programs by eliminating muscular compensations and weaknesses that would otherwise inhibit optimal performance. Achieving and maintaining a neutral hip and spine position along with proper knee and foot position will translate into speed, power and efficiency. If the right muscles are stabilizing and moving the body, then you will then get the most out of your body. Correcting muscular imbalances will not only keep you off of the sidelines, but will also ensure that you will be the strongest and most efficient player that you could possibly be.
The Patented evaluation and virtual therapy system (US Patent No. 8,715,176) used by PTX is a highly advanced expert system, using thousands of algorithms with dynamic complex decision patterns. It is the result of decades of one-on-one clinician-patient experiences, followed by years more of algorithm development, and testing in thousands of real-life pain situations. Research and clinical observation of biomechanics, kinesiology, human kinetics, and functional anatomy have been used to create this system. Since PTX Therapy is a hands-free treatment program, even in clinic, this therapy allows us to deliver the same programs over the Internet, to reach millions. This is another very unique aspect of the therapy – another “X-factor”. Based on an interactive questionnaire (taking only a few minutes to complete), the system quickly determines your physical condition and probable muscle imbalances. Then it immediately provides a personalized postural therapy program to change you posture and relieve your pain. Anytime, 24/7/365. Anywhere. That’s Powerful.
PTX is not a one-size-fits-all solution. PTX Therapy delivers the most personalized and effective therapy in the world, whether online or in-clinic. We do not have a set protocol for specific symptoms, i.e. there is no generic routine or magical exercise for back pain. Instead, we have nearly 1,000 therapy exercises in our database, which can be put together in literally millions of different therapy routine combinations, based on your information. We’re all different, with different environments, different injuries or reasons for pain, so why should your therapy be identical to another’s? PTX is very specific to you!
You get full access to the entire PTX Therapy website, including personalized therapy sessions via the Patented evaluation and virtual therapy system (US Patent No. 8,715,176). This includes personalized follow-up Progress Evaluation Reports, allowing you to receive new therapy routines built specifically for you! As part of the experience, libraries of educational and instructional videos, which keep growing, will give you further powerful tools to live pain free while enjoying an active lifestyle. The information you will learn about your body, reason for your pain, how to evaluate postural issues, how to have a different perspective on other treatments and programs out there, is all truly invaluable. The community of PTX is growing and we value all therapists and clients that are part of it.
Every routine has a cover page with each exercise listed in correct sequence; remember, the sequence is the most important part of the program (See “Science is in the Sequence” video). After each exercise listed, there will be clear instructions (prescribed number of sets and repetitions or amount of time) along with a short video presentation of each exercise, in the proper sequence. For further convenience, we enable you to print out a cover sheet and still pictures of each exercise so that you can keep your program with you. Or, all routines are archived in your account, and can be viewed via any Smartphone, tablet or computer.
Many people get well rather quickly, especially compared to any other treatment plan (See our Case Studies and Testimonials). You could begin feeling better after one session, or it could take several weeks. It all depends on the individual; you probably didn’t get into your current condition overnight, and so sometimes it takes a little bit of time for you to get out of it. Most likely you will feel posture & symptom changes every time you complete a therapy session. The “window” of feeling better will increase with time. Remember, the more consistently you perform your prescribed routines, the sooner you will be pain free and feeling better. It’s all up to you!
Each routine builds on the previous routine. There is no magic number of routines, since the layers of compensation and dysfunction are different for everyone. If you have been in pain for years, it will probably require more than one session to get your body to be able to move without limitation. You may need to go through a series of routines that will progressively unravel years of compensation. With each routine your body will increasingly look and feel better. This isn’t a magic pill, but it is flat out better than anything else out there to truly get you well.
Everyone responds differently, but generally speaking, a commitment of a ½ hour a day will yield the fastest results. Some routines may be less, and some longer. As your body changes, you will need to do less each day to maintain your health. It will take longer to feel better if you don’t commit much time, or if you don’t do the routine daily, but it will still help. Just like any exercise program, your results will be determined by the effort you put into the program. You can perform all of the stretches and exercises in the comfort of your own home, eliminating extra commuting time to a gym or clinic.
Routines are prescribed in a specific manner for a very specific reason. It is imperative you follow your routine as it is written. The sequence is absolutely vital! There are no magical exercises – the sequence is the most important component of the PTX therapy program. (See “Science is in the Sequence” video). Each exercise sets your body up for the next exercise, and no exercise will negate what a prior has accomplished. These are not merely stretches. They all have a strength component that, when done in the proper sequence, can change your body’s postural alignment, change the articulations of the joints, curvature of your spine, and allow for balance and proper muscular function. The result = pain goes away.
Upon receiving your initial routine you will have a library of instructional and educational videos in your dashboard. More detailed answers to this and many other specific program questions can be found in those videos. Since the sequence is so important (See “Science is in the Sequence” video), then you don’t want to pick n choose or skip any. If a particular exercise causes pain (distinguish between the “muscle working/fatigue” and “actual pain”), give it a few repetitions or seconds and see if the pain subsides. None of the exercises should increase a symptom. However, you should expect a feeling of muscle work. If pain persists then skip the particular exercise for the day and continue with the remainder of the therapy routine. Perform the entire routine again the next day (including the previously skipped exercise). Attempt this process to increase the level of comfort with the exercise until your next routine is made available.
Upon receiving your initial routine you will have a library of instructional and educational videos in your dashboard. One such video “Why These Exercises?” will explain why most exercises in your therapy routine will not be directly targeting your pain site. We must treat the body as one unit. If we work only on the painful area, we are simply addressing the symptom and not the problem. Remember the children’s jingle – “the ankle-bone’s-connected-to-the, shin bone; shin-bone’s-connected-to-the, knee bone, knee-bone’s-connected-to-the, thigh bone….” PTX Therapy always focuses on the entire body, always! It’s what makes you well.
We instruct you to perform the current routine given at least once EVERY day. Being consistent with the routine will change the alignment of your body and cause the symptom(s) to go away. Even if the symptom(s) go away you should continue with the routine, and new routines, since they are working on the postural and muscular dysfunctions that caused the symptom(s) in the first place. Bottom line – the routines and your new posture keep the symptom(s) away.
It is preferable to perform your entire routine in the morning, in order to gain the benefits of an aligned foundation for the rest of your daily activities. By aligning the body early, the movement throughout the day reinforces the new postural position. However, it is certainly acceptable to perform the exercises at other times during the day. Performing the exercises properly and on a consistent daily basis is more important than when they are done. It is also acceptable, if necessary, to split the routine of exercises into morning and evening segments, by choosing your “shorter version” for AM or PM, or just doing the shorter one for days in which you just can’t get the “full version” in. If you are seen in-clinic, consult with your therapists about when and how to break up the routine into smaller segments if needed. If you are also performing other workout programs in conjunction with your PTX routine, there are numerous studies showing exercise raises the resting metabolic rate (RMR), not only while you are doing it, but for 18 hours afterwards. Therefore, you burn more calories per hour all day. But if you work out in the evening and then go to sleep, RMR drops like a rock, and you lose a major fat-loss effect.
At any date in the future, if you experience any reoccurrence or new symptom elsewhere in the body, simply sign in and choose New Therapy under your account profile. The system will again take you through the interactive questionnaire, and design your new initial therapy routine, as well as follow up with Progress Reports for this symptom(s). There is NO new charge for this new therapy “program”, as it comes with your subscription.
Absolutely! We have seen great weight loss effects, as a result of two primary reasons: 1) PTX Therapy gets the deep postural muscles to wake up again, and there are hundreds and hundreds of those muscles, and the most efficient way to increase your metabolic rate is by increasing your muscle mass. When your posture changes, by virtue of the therapy causing the change, then your metabolism kicks in because you simply have more muscle-work taking place all day long. 2) When pain is removed, then it isn’t such a chore to go walk around the block, or get to the gym, or go on that run or hike. Inherent in the pain symptoms disappearing is that weight disappears also as you take on a more active lifestyle, pain-free! Also, perhaps this is the third reason, when you do workout, your workouts are far more efficient than without PTX, because your postural muscles allow for the larger prime-mover muscles to work at an optimum level. Let’s think about this, when’s the last time you saw a real good look’n guy or girl, you know, with a rock’n body, whose posture was horrible? Uhhh, ExactlyJ Posture rules for even more benefits than just pain relief. Go try it out yourself, or have your significant other, husband or wife, stand with their shoulders back, feet pointed straight ahead, butt kicked back with proper arch in lower back, and head/neck back as well. How’s that look? Alright then, point made! But you/they can’t hold that position, so better get signed up on PTXJ
This depends entirely on your condition(s) as well as what your current workout routine or activities are. If seen in-clinic, seek advice from your therapist about what you may be able to keep doing. If you are using the online virtual therapist only, then error on the side of caution by backing off of other activities if you are in a lot of pain; just focus on your PTX Therapy regimen until you feel well enough to get back to other things. Our bodies are designed to move, and all movement should be good for the body. If a specific activity or movement hurts, then the body is alerting you to the fact that something is wrong. You will have to listen to your body to determine how quickly you can get back to your activities. Pain will diminish as you improve the biomechanics and joint position of your body with the daily routine. You will begin moving with greater mobility, range of motion and body awareness, thus finding greater enjoyment in other workout program, sports, or activities. Bottom line – this program is foundational, and therefore the most important for you.
If you are performing other workout or sports program, it is definitely best to do your PTX routine (at the very least the short version) before you do anything else. Your routine sets your body up for a more efficient workout and also to re-enforce the more functional posture during your workout. To grab an analogy, it’s like aligning your car – should you get the alignment done before or after the road trip? Exactly J
The exercises are designed to reintroduce new movement and to improve neuromuscular patterns. In order for the body NOT to fall back into old patterns of misalignment, you must continue to remind the body how it is designed to move. For most of us, there is just not enough activity in our days to keep us from falling back into the old patterns. To continue to reinforce the improved movement of the body, some sort of maintenance routine that triggers muscle memory, will be helpful for the rest of your life. The online system and any of our therapists can recommend a maintenance schedule for you. Just like you brush our teeth every day to prevent decay, you can promote long-term joint and muscle function by doing a few exercises, specifically tailored for your needs, every day. Be encouraged, this stuff is valuable for life!
If you have not completed your routine for 2 or more weeks, please go back to your most recently completed routine and proceed to go through that routine for at least another 4 days before continuing on to your new routine. If you have not completed your routine for an extended period of time and your symptoms are the same or worse, please begin again with the first routine. If you have not completed your routine for many months and your symptoms have dramatically changed, or pain is in a different area, then you should get a new PTX Therapy program to address your current condition.
Doing your PTX Therapy Routine more than once a day does not necessarily mean that you will improve twice as fast. However, it can make a great deal of difference in your progress, especially early on, because you are giving your body more positive stimulus in that given day. The most important thing is to be consistent in doing your routine on a daily basis. Furthermore, although it may not hurt to perform a few more sets, repetitions, or minutes, it is best to adhere to the given amount of stimulus and demand that is prescribed in each therapy session, i.e. no need to go crazy with 10 sets of 20, if it just calls for 3 sets J
Though it is good to be aware of your posture during the day, forcing yourself to have good posture is not the answer. Due to your postural routine you may start to feel that your body is not as comfortable in it’s old posture. This is due to your therapy program reminding your muscles what their proper job is, and thus your kinesthetic sense (body awareness) will improve – so it’s ok to maintain that new position consciously. As the muscle function changes, your posture will automatically improve. Any forced attempt to simply hold good posture, will not last more than a few minutes, and will most often be using the wrong muscles anyway. Remember, we are not teaching you to stand up taller or sit up straighter – we are instead providing your body with the structural integrity (deep postural muscle strength) needed to accomplish these things on its own.
You can find everything you need right in your own home. Upon receiving your initial routine you will have a library of instructional and educational videos in your dashboard, including “No equipment, No problem” which will give recommendations for you. However, the exact PTX Therapy cushions, and other equipment that you see in our exercise videos are certainly much easier and more convenient to use. All PTX branded stuff can all be purchased through our website’s Shop, with many styles and colors to choose from.
The principles that PTX Therapy utilizes have been around a long time, but PTXTherapy dot com has put it all together and taken it to the next level in terms of accessibility, education, pain relief, and strength programs. We are simply using fundamental principles of anatomy, physiology, human kinetics, kinesiology and biomechanics. It won’t be long before the world is very familiar with PTX Therapy; it’s most sound and logical approach, and its remarkable results.
You may receive some temporary relief from drugs, however, it doesn’t deal with the question why you have pain or why your muscles are tense. As such, it does not and cannot fix the cause of the problem and thus can only be temporary relief, a “band-aid” at best. In addition, the taking of drugs can have side effects and weaken the immune system as well as properties of certain tissues. One of the goals here at PTX Therapy is to get you off of those meds as soon as possible (See our Testimonials for our proven results). If you are just trying to get through the night or day, we completely understand, so keep doing your therapy routine and as you are able just take less and less. Eat clean and healthy foods, and drink lots of water too, as this can help rid your body of toxins caused by these medications. Be encouraged that you are on a path to pain-free and drug-free living. Amen.
The responsibility lies within each individual to take control of his or her own health. We believe you will find PTX to be a common sense, most logical approach to treating chronic pain. We are blessed to offer such an amazing program, accessible and affordable to all. Our guarantee is that the human body is designed for movement, is designed to be in a strong and stable right-angle-joint position, have a proper hip tilt and S-curvature of the spine (See the “Blueprint”). PTX provides positive movement in a sedentary/negative environment, affording the body to move more freely while getting closer to that proper “blueprint” position. The only thing you really have to lose here, is your pain. (Please visit our Helping People Testimonials, and our Case Studies)
“It’s genetics” is often times the diagnosis that is given when the cause is unknown. Since many people with such a diagnosis have improved with our therapy program, we would have to say that unless our exercises are actually changing the DNA, “genetics” are overrated as a cause of many ailments. Forgive the sarcasm, but is there a gene that causes sciatica down the right leg, but not the left? A gene that leads to tennis elbow, a left foot that’s splayed out, or hips that are tilted under??? The fact is that many ailments from arthritis, to headaches, to lower back spasms or even a variety of spinal conditions that are often thought to be genetically based, are most likely musculoskeletal problems that can be corrected. We do inherit environments, but don’t always accept that you have your pain issues (physical that is, lolJ) from Mom or Dad. We debunk the “it’s genetics” myth every day here at PTX!
Age, like genetics, unfairly receives way too much blame for chronic pain and injury. See the “DeBunking Age, Wear & Tear” video. Pain, vulnerability to injury, decrease in flexibility and athleticism, and even many “diseases” are often the result of a sedentary lifestyle / lack of proper movement and resulting postural issues. This lack of movement can eventually incapacitate all systems of the body. PTX Therapy seeks to reverse this deterioration process. Don’t buy into the “you’re old and that’s why things hurt” myth – we debunk that notion every day at PTX!
Truth is, true leg-length discrepancies are rare. It’s a wastebasket diagnosis by many practitioners. Most of the time the difference is simply a result of muscle imbalances causing one hip to elevate and/or rotate, thereby making it appear (to even trained professionals) that one leg is longer than the other. These imbalances can also cause knee and ankle joint articulations to change, rotate, collapse, which may also appear as a leg length discrepancy. The only true leg length test is an X-ray and radiology measurement of the actual bones. PTX Therapy returns muscular balance and can often make those “leg-length” discrepancies mysteriously disappear. Orthotics can sometimes help pain temporarily, but mostly are just a “band-aid”, and can actually cause further damage as the same dysfunctions causing the problem are still at work in the body with the orthotics in place. To grab an analogy, it’s like a tug-of-war, the harder one side pulls, the harder the other side replies. The orthotic is actually forcing the body into a position it doesn’t want to go, since the body muscularly has been programmed to go the other direction (thus your need for orthotics in the first place). You weren’t born with orthotics on your feet, nor did you need them at age 3 or 4 or 5 (congenital abnormalities exception), because your movement patterns resulted in feet pointed straight ahead, with balanced hips and spine, etc. Posture was good. Continue to wear your orthotics only as needed for your pain, but as you perform your postural therapy routine, you will notice the orthotics no longer feel as comfortable. That’s when you can begin to get rid of them for good – your deep structural / postural muscles doing their job will take place of the external / foreign devices. Amen.
We feel that most evidence points to the healthiest of diets being a clean raw fruits and vegetable type of diet; diets that create proper pH balance and alkaline body levels. The importance of this alkaline body pH cannot be underestimated, and so we encourage you to research this, and those balanced nutritious foods that produce an alkaline body. The opposite are those highly processed foods that cause our body pH to become acidic, making us susceptible to disease, obesity, and all sorts of compromised body functions. From a macronutrient level (proteins, fats, carbohydrates), we believe in balance here also, with lean clean proteins and the lots of the good kinds of fats. There’s our take. Simple. Don’t buy into the fad diets or fad fitness eating plans – God’s food rules over man’s food everyday! (of course, mix’n in a great bacon-cheeseburger and butter-pecan ice cream once in a while doesn’t hurt to maintain such “balance”, lolJ, no…seriously.)
The importance of water cannot be overstated. You may think you’re hydrated because you’re not thirsty. The truth is, however, most people are dehydrated. Unless you’re drinking 10-16 8 oz. glasses of water a day, chances are you are dehydrated too. That’s up to a gallon a day! Remember, your muscles and your brain are over 75% water, the blood that carries your nutrients are 82% water, and the lungs that provide your oxygen are nearly 90% water. Even your bones are made up of over 25% water! So, there’s no doubt that the most important nutrient for your body is plain ol’ water. We suggest that you drink until you become thirsty. That’s right, if your body lives in a dehydrated state then you won’t be thirsty because it knows nothing else. Think of it this way, the desert experiences flash floods when it rains, because the ground is so dry it doesn’t know what to do with the water, so there’s runoff. If it rains enough, then the ground uses and thrives for the water. Well, once your body becomes hydrated, your body’s thirst sensors will once again work properly. In the meantime, you may have to hit the restroom a bit more often for the days the body is getting rehydrated. Muscle hydration (lots of H20) will also help the effectiveness of your PTX Therapy program by allowing for significantly more flexibility and strength. To grab another analogy, beef jerky is dehydrated muscle tissue, and of course isn’t very pliable at all. Your muscle tissue needs to stay hydrated to be supple. Drink up! Oh, and don’t forget that things like alcohol and caffeine are diuretics, meaning that they dehydrate you. So drink just plain clean water and lots of it.
Sleep is extremely important not just for fitness goals, but just to maintain health and balance. Sleep debt in today’s society is now at epidemic proportions, and there is good evidence it is linked to many diseases. The general rule for rest is to get 7 ½ -9 ½ hours of sleep each night. It’s important to understand sleep deprivation is cumulative and by missing an hour here and there you will create a sleep deficit with negative affects on all aspects of your body starting at the sub-cellular level, and from mental health to athletic performance. Furthermore, without adequate rest your body will fail to adapt to the proper exercise and nutrition you are “feeding” it. For athletes who train heavily, a 30-60 minute nap after the training session is invaluable to maximize the effects of training adaptation. Let’s pay off some of this sleep debt by putting down the remote, logging off, leaving the office, stopping the chaos, and hitting the pillow. Talk about a quick fix – the benefits of will be noticeable almost immediately.
The virtual therapy system will create new therapy routines for you after you complete the Progress Reports. Reports are delivered 7 days after completion of the initial questionnaire and each subsequent report. Reports are fast and simple to complete and can be done from any mobile device or computer. The reason for this is to allow your current routine to change your body’s alignment and have the desired affect on your symptoms. Also, based on the answers of how you are doing with the current session, the system will make adjustments and create a new routine to maximize results – it’s literally your virtual therapist following up with you, just like if you were going in-clinic. The system will also keep you informed of the next routine’s availability with courtesy emails or texts. Be consistent with your routines, and with your Progress Reports for maximum benefits. For those who go in-clinic, the same is true; get back in for a re-evaluation so that your PTX Therapist can design a new routine for you.
We offer several methods for paying for the PTX Therapy service. Please click here to find one that works for you. Our payment sign up process is as quick and simple as anything that exists on the web.
