Jo A. “Jaz” Reis earned B.S. and M.S. degrees in Physical Education and competed on the Women’s Basketball Team at Cal State Fullerton in the mid 1970’s. She was heavily
influenced in biomechanics by her coach, Billie Moore, and in motor learning by Dr. Diane Ross. By the late 1970’s she had terrible, constant back pain and found some relief taking yoga classes from Ken Ravizza at Cal State. His influence started her on a path of self healing, starting with William Dufty’s Sugar Blues. She taught and coached basketball in college for a few years, confronting the effects of Proposition 13 and what it did for college funding (in her case, a 2 year position, non-tenured, that disappeared after 2 years).
After 10 years as a systems engineer in the auto industry, her excruciating low back pain propelled her to quit and to circle back for some self-healing pain relief. She found master yoga teacher Roger Eischens, a fellow athlete and educator, and studied with him for 2 years in Madison, WI. She made huge progress on her pain relief and started teaching again, incorporating Roger’s biomechanical lessons on how to locate levers of movement to accomplish pain relief. After a head injury in 2008 and out of necessity, she started gardening for work, which stirred up her back pain again. She discovered the Egoscue Method in 2010. Shortly after beginning with Egoscue in earnest in January of 2011, she was astonished to realize that her 3-year old concussion symptoms were nearly gone.
Once more, she studied the methodology that helped her, so as to better help her clients. She received her Posture Alignment Specialist certification from Egoscue University in July of 2011. She then completed the Exercise Therapy certification. She also attended a 3-week learning intensive at the Egoscue Clinic in Orange County, California in 2013.
She now practices in her Pain Free Santa Fe studio in Santa Fe, New Mexico, providing both in person and online therapy sessions. From studying Pete Egoscue’s work, Jaz’s unique contributions now incorporate the understanding that the proper levers of healing movement can be unique for each individual, and she is committed to helping each of her clients figure out what their own personal needs are.
